Cheyenne (pronounced Shy-ann) Mountain - overlooking the city of Colorado Springs, one of the nations most important military bases lies deep within it, housing units of the North American Aerospace Command, the Air Force Space Command, and the United States Space Command. This futuristic combat operations center is also where they plan to keep the elite, pre-chosen survivors of our human race - in the event of a possible doomsday.
Imagine...
another world, a new world, the best of the best, a perfect society chosen by the highest ranking government officials --- to be the survivors of an inevitable nuclear war, a war that will leave the earth cold and dead for some thousand years...
During the mid-1950s, a secret government organization who call themselves the Dharma Initiative are hired to build an island (a safehouse, a Cheyenne Mountain) somewhere in the South Pacific that will house this perfect selection and carry on the human existence until the outside world heals itself. The island's synthetic mountain was hollow, housing a small air force base and docking unit, and contained generators producing enough electricity to power a city the size of Tampa, Fla. Underground compounds were erected amid a maze of tunnels and passageways extending for miles. The island was designed to survive a direct hit by an atomic weapon. Emergency hatches were constructed at numerous points around the perimeter. Each monitored by several teams whose sole mission was to ensure the officials below that each hatch was prepared in the event of an emergency, be it nuclear or otherwise. "Fire drill" procedures were developed, evacuation techniques set in place. If the perfect race needed it, there was a Plan B.
Meanwhile, this monitored community lives in harmony among waterfalls, tending gardens and livestock. A perfect Utopian society. Happy children dance in the streets while doctors and scientists and professors make decisions that affect their people and the ultimate outcome of the new world.
These people live on the other side of the Lost island.
The Dark Territory.
And in the narrow-minded streets of this otherwise cheerful community, there are vague, unsettling rumors of a shadow... A phantom...
A monster.
Imagine the excited, nervous whispers of wide-eyed island children, spinning tall tales, describing this abominable creature and it's ghastly deeds. Stalking the jungle surrounding their only known home. It was the cause of the disappearances, they said, of bad children, of insolent elders; their blood-stained carcasses were torn to shreds and hung from trees, or pulled into the ground, never to be seen again.
And then there was another story. Spread by an elder who eventually vanished. He spoke of a gigantic metal bird in the sky - full of other people - and how the monster knocked this spectacular miracle of flight from the clouds and sent it crashing onto the island. The elder called the people on board this shuttle 'saints' and 'free spirits', and with the evidence of their miraculous survival, insisted they were sent by a higher power to declare war on the ultimate evil which has literally taken over the last of the living world. Yes. The loose-lipped elder disappeared shortly after saying all this...
But these island children are brave, they are smart, they are talented, but overall they are curious. With tattered teddy bears in hand, the Utopian younglings still devise tactics to sneak away from the flock - often for no other reason than the hope of catching a glimpse of these strangers, our heroes, the LostAways, who somehow fell out of the heavens. Imagine what the face of an angel looks like in the mind of a child - one who has never heard of an airplane. This curiosity, accompianed with an overwhelming fear of a monster that eats naughty children, drives these brilliant little minds to perfect the art of quiet.
Now lets drop 150 stories below the basement. Imagine a top-secret military installation. A massive underground facility where Dharma employees in white body suits scurry around like carpenter ants with clipboards. They monitor codes sent from stations above. They conduct experiments and repair flaws in their highly effective security system, which includes advanced biological defenses as well as the engineering of wild beasts. In this case, Noah didn't have an ark full of animals - he had a suitcase full of DNA...
But their proudest achievement was an electromagnetic/mind-controlled, astral - projection machine. The Initiative's security system. Utopia's monster. Powerful enough to down an aircraft, or lift the wreckage of a ship from the sea.
All of this was the sole purpose of Dharma - to stablize the seemingly perfect world they had created. To be in constant control of their Shangri-La.
Occasionally a select few in the special operations division are sent up - in disguise - to deliver important messages to the eyes and ears of trusted elders above, or carry out evil deeds better left to capable mortal hands.
And occasionally, one of those little carpenter ants in the white Dharma bodysuits will be driven insane. What if you had never felt the sun on your skin? Or gazed at a marvelous blue sky? Imagine an incident. A deranged Dharma employee with bloodshot eyes gaining access to the controls of the ultimate weapon. Someone who still believes in an outside world, off of this cursed island. Someone who remembers something, and wants to escape, but cannot, without the help of others...
A passenger jet blips on a monitor somewhere in this impressive underground lair.
A pair of trembling hands push a button and take the controls, then, through an astonishing feat in technology, the desperate individual's mind is projected up, up, and above - into the eye of the monster.
An airplane full of hope is ripped into pieces.
These in-experienced hands (and unstable mind) are not familiar with the controls. The tail-end is lost in the ocean. The cockpit crashes into the jungle. The treasured middle of the forever doomed Oceanic Flight 815 is saved, brought down carefully enough to ensure the noble passengers are relatively intact.
A few days later, a nuclear war begins. And ends. Everything.
And so our heroes wash up on shore. Humans. Tormented by memories. Tortured by feelings of guilt. Haunted by demons from their pasts. Few realize they've been spared from extinction by a higher power, and the troubling baggage they carry - every detail - up to this point, has sub-consciously prepared them to be the last (free) survivors of a powerful war.
And this island. This new home. It welcomes them. They are the Natural Selection. There is a mother nature. There is a father time.
Life finds a way.
Imagine...
One dark, crucial day, when enough is enough, our army of heroes, lead by their doctor, will uncover and infiltrate this seemingly perfect society, demanding answers, exposing the evil behind the curtain, and ultimately fulfilling their un-deniable purpose to rise up and take control of the future...

Also, who IS actually the EVIL, and who IS good, this is all perception, and I feel will greatly change before everything comes together. |

The losties as the real interlopers, prying their way int an otherwise utopian society. Cool theory, actually. A reverse perspective on M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village", if you will.
Wouldn't they have some firepower to just swat the invading maggots, though? Some sort of safety procedures to prevent exactly what is happening?
Also, why would they need to take some of te losties (several tailies, Walt, Alex)? _________________

perhaps this is the reason for the black smoke, or the thing that pulled locke underground when they were in the dark territory.... all defense systems put in place to keep people away from this other society.
i like this theory... good work _________________ My name is Sayid Jarrah and I am a torturer |

Not very effective, IMHO. If I'd go to all that trouble to build an utopia, I would make sure that no outsiders would interfere. And what I mean by outsiders is your invading plattoon of SEALs, mind you, not a bunch of castaways with virtually no combat experience or survival knowledge (exceptions made to Sayid and Locke, of course).
I'm talking about landmines, camera controlled machine guns, huge beartraps a dozen a square yard, infrared triggered grenades, remote controled unmanned aircrafts armed to the wazoo and basically everything that didn't include radioactive or poisonous weapons.
By those standars, those guys should have been reduced to hamburger very soon after crashing on the island. _________________

Damn thats good!
I have thought for a long time that the losties are being set up to loose thier minds while tracking down an evil (others) and in the course of this they become the same thing they were fighting.
If the losties eventually become the ultimate force on the island, would they not be just as "evil" as the others?
Along with your theory, i think this would make a lot of sense |

LOL!!!
But then again, it is a utopia for them Others, not for the losties. I mean, even the monks in a budhist monastery will be seen as raving savages by the chickens they raise. _________________

Heh, well, I don't know about you, but I'd rather kill a chicken than kidnap babies... I mean, we got this whole birdflu thing and all too... Killing birds is like a good thing these days, but if you go and kidnap babies, you're most likely a pedophile fatherless boy! |
