Since everyone (or most) think that the Smoke is capable of Shapeshifting I think it is plausible that the smoke became vincent at the beggining to learn about the losties. There are weird occurences with vincent especially in the pilot that make this possible.
In the pilot of LOST when jack wakes up, Vincent is there in the jungle randomly
When Jack Charlie and Kate go off to find the rest of the plane, Vincent is right behind them in a bush and the camera is kept on him in a sort of creepy way and right after jack encounters the smoke.
Vincent runs from shannon so she runs after him with Sayid and instead of finding Vincent they find Walt who at the time was on the raft.
In the first episode of the first season you only see what the smoke is doing in the Jungle and vincent hadnt been found by locke yet and the second time you see the smoke is after walt gives vincent to shannon and shannon isnt capable of watching crap.
I mean even if she took her eyes of the dog for a second it could travel at that crazy speed we all see it zoom by on the show and get to where jack Kate and lock were carrying the dynamite. I feel like vincent died in the crash and the smoke shapeshifted into him so it could get itself into the losties unnoticed. The smoke has been Vincent the whole time. Whenever the smoke appears you dont know where vincent is so it isnt that far off. Just my two cents. _________________ I Hate Black Smoke

The producers said there is something about Vincent we don't know. I've been thinking this for a long time, you might be right. _________________ What lies in the shadow of the statue? |

Seems like a stretch. What makes you so sure the smoke monster can take the form of a golden retriever? _________________

Wow. Good point.
What if it was never Vincent?
I need to go back and watch the episodes where vincent was missing, and see if there are any other forms he took on... |

well what do you think Yemi meant by "you speak to me as if I were your brother". I am pretty sure that he is the smoke and if Yemi is the smoke so was Jacks Dad, Walt, and Dave. So why not a golden retriever. You should all go back and watch the pilot there is some weird stuff with Vincent. _________________ I Hate Black Smoke |

| Remember what Locke said: there's a good player and a bad player. What if there's two monsters controlled by two "players"? One which has taken positive forms (such as the Hurley bird, Vincent, Good Yemi, and the horse) and one with negative forms (Bad Yemi)? |

I've been throwing this theory around with my family since the second half of season two. The reason I believe that the smoke could have taken the form of Vincent is simple: think of the crash. How could an animal in, presumably a steel cage, survive an impact at that velocity, assuming the cage got thrown out of the luggage during the split.
Also, I assume that the smoke got the form of Yemi from the scan it conducted during The 23rd Psalm. It knew what would be the best form to approach Eko in (and to be honest, I think he wanted to kill him all along. His penance for any confession he'd give would be death). Now lets assume that at some point after the crash, the smoke scanned walt or michael as well. It would have learned the harmless form of a family pet, also giving it easy access to the camp.
As the original poster said, the dog shows up at odd times. The first scene in the jungle, watching as Kate, Jack, and Sawyer go to the cockpit, and before Sun is assaulted. |

Yeah, but can the smoke be a YELLOW LAB? I mean if he was a golden retriever, all the people who know their dog breeds would be tipped off |

He was an african american priest wearing a white collar with black clothing. I'm pretty sure he can be a dog. |

I started thinking about this possibility on another thread post, but thought it also appropriate here.
Anyone read Michael Crichton's "Prey" Here's a synopsis from MC's website: "Prey
Hardcover
Published in November, 2002 by Harper Collins
In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles -- micro-robots -- has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour. Every attempt to destroy it has failed. And we are the prey.
As fresh as today's headlines, Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it. Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and artificial distributed intelligence -- in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down. Because time is running out.
"
If that doesn't sound like the smoke then I don't know what does. Sounds plausible and could be further explained that the nano-bots are now better adapted and can take the form of different objects or people for that matter. _________________ A: So, what's this for? | Since everyone I presume has gotten to a consensus that smokey can shapeshift and can think, I have a theory that the "others" are possibly just replicates of smokey. This is probably the answer to why they do not leave footprints, i.e. last episode of season 1 |

The reason it had to scan Eko is because Vincent hadn't seen Eko before with the original losties. After Walt left Vincent got away from shannon and hadnt been seen again. When Eko came to the main part of the island we see the smoke scanning Eko and we see flashes of his memories in the smoke. It also explains why Jack never had to be scanned to see his father because vincent in the camp had time to scan every original lostie.
And to add on the Nano-bot theory, I believed that it was that too until damon and Abrams said that the smoke was not made up of nano-bots...unless they lied to us. _________________ I Hate Black Smoke |

Sayid said that he say footprints on the Pala dock that were fresh. Mayeb they were just more careful in season 1. _________________ A: So, what's this for? J: It's uh... it's for shark fishing. A: Shark fishing... with a silencer? |
