I have a theory about the machine, smokie and the swan hatch after reading this thread:

I think that Smokie may be the result of an experiment being run by DHARMA. DHARMA scientists came to the island to research the elctormagnetic anamoly, study it's properties and try to harness it's power.

I'm basing this on the swan hatch. I also believe that the electromagnetic anamoly is what "hides" the island from view. Not so much making it invisible but possibly bending light rays or reflecting such technologies as radar and satellite. Therefore, you cannot see the island with satellite imagery or radar so the only way to get to the island is to "stumble" upon it.

Ok... moving along here. I believe that the Machine is the result of DHARMA's first attempt at building "something" and using the properties of the anamoly to conceal it. Basically, it's reflecting what is around it and therefore the losties are unable to actually see it.

Smokie is the result of a subsequent experiment where the DHARMA scientists may have tried to actually harness the anamoly and attempt to control it as an artificial intelligence. It doesn't reflect what is around it but actually reflects the subconcious. Thus we see Kate’s horse, Jack’s father, Hurley’s Dave, Sayid’s Walt, Eko's brother, etc...

Smokie and the Machine are also not affected by the anamoly like other metallic objects simply because they are based on the same properties as the anamoly. Sort of like what happens if you hold 2 magnets next to each other. They repel rather than attract.

So now, the DHARMA scientists believe they can utilize the power, manipulate it and harness it so this brings us to the Swan hatch. The Swan hatch is the failed result of a final grand experiment wherein DHARMA has attmpted to find and control the source of the power in order to harvest it and possibly expand it beyond the island. In doing so, they somehow disrupted the natural source to where it now needs to be contained every 108 minutes in order to maintain what was previously the natural levels of the anamoly on the island.

The events in the S2 season finale is basically DHARMA's failsafe. Should their control mechanism fail, they believe they can completely cutoff the source of the anamoly by destroying the area but protecting the scientists with the blast doors. They think this will ultimately reveal the island but by then, the secrets will have been lost with the executiion of the failsafe.

I think we will find out that the failsafe did not have the result DHARMA thought it would.

I like this theory a lot, and some of the points you bring up here are very nice.....

The only part I don't like is the end, about the island being revealed. I think, and hope, that this will not happen.....
