|
|
I would like to reference H. P. Lovecraft. He was someone who wrote fictional works based on his philosophical ideals. They were dark, graphic stories but it was also a creation of a “mythos”. He created stories so intricate that it was deemed its own mythology as many writers would convene with him to create a cycle of mythological ideals, such as the Cthulhu mythos. Cuse and Lindelof REPEATEDLY refer to the “Lost Mythology”. This gives me the idea that they’ve created their own ideas, their own views based on their own philosophical beliefs. Which is why no one has pinpointed what Lost is in actuality. There is something else here that they have done in which there is very little possibility for anyone to figure out. However, I believe I have.
Part of Lost (or maybe the entire premise) has to do with the Lovecraftian Milieu. The Lovecraftian Milieu describes the influence of Lovecraft’s ideals on people who followed his work. The Milieu usually contains
- Anachronisms as well as old-fashioned words when dealing with such things for instance, the use of the term "men of science" rather than the modern word, "scientist".
- Detachment. Lovecraftian heroes (both in original writings and in more modern adaptations) tend to be isolated individuals, usually with an academic or scholary bent.
- Helplessness and hopelessness. Although Lovecraftian heroes may occasionally deal a "setback" to malignant forces, their victories are temporary, and they usually pay a price for it. Otherwise, subjects often find themselves completely unable to simply run away, instead driven by some other force to their desperate en-Unanswered questions.
- Characters in Lovecraft's stories rarely if ever fully understand what is happening to them, and often go insane if they try.
There are other features of Lovecraft’s work that I’d like to bring to attention as well. All of this information is from wikipedia and other sites. I do not have extensive knowledge of Lovecraft’s work, but I’m trying to make the best connections I can.
- a series of imitative fantasies in a "Dreamlands" setting
- hidden mysteries which lay behind reality
- Lovecraft wrote, "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents... some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
- the protagonist is not in control of his own actions, or finds it impossible to change course.
- The idea of civilization being under threat against barbaric/primative elements
- a civilized culture being gradually undermined by a malevolent underclass influenced by inhuman forces.
All of these ideals combine to create the illustion of the survivors of flight 815. We know for a fact that the creators are huge on philosophy from the mere fact that we have a character called John Locke, “Tabula Rasa”, etc. The fantasies in Dreamlands would explain the weird dreams certain characters are having. The survivors have a threat from what they perceive as a primitive society in the others, although we have learned that this is not actually the case. I believe that it is the idea of a primitive society that is more important.
Now, I know the concept of Cthulhu has been brought up before, but I do not think that the idea was fully realized.
Cthulhu
- will ultimately require the assistance of his human cult to escape from his watery tomb
- is said to be colossal, but his exact size is not given.
- he can communicate with "the fleshy mind of mammels” in their dreams.
- can control his physical form by sheer will alone
- is generally amoral with its own set of ethics, and man's significance in the universe is validated by his connection to divine agents with similar moral values
- Cthulhu has a cult which has survived through the centuries and is arguably the most effective at recruiting new members. While Cthulhu dreams in R'lyeh, his cult actively pursues its agenda in his name
and as a side note, R’lyeh is an island located in the Pacific ocean that is said to house the entity of Cthulhu.
Anyway…let me get to my point. I am not claiming that Lost is another installment of the Cthulhu mythos…however, it is a divergence from it. The monster on the island has similar qualities to Cthulhu, but I believe that is not the answer. The others are a “cult” per se that does the bidding of the creature. Lets analyze it a bit more. Henry claimed that he was coming for Locke. But what happened to Locke? He saw the creature early in season one and it did not harm him. He claimed that “he looked into the eye of the island” and that it was “beautiful”. Next, in the season one finale, the monster seems to focus on him and pulls him away appearing to take him, as Locke says it is testing him. The creature does not kill him like it did with the pilot of flight 815. And then Henry comes to take Locke but gets captured.
The others seem benign in nature. That have alterior motives that are separate and maybe opposite of the survivors of the crash. They arent all DHARMA people, but some of them are. For instance, Tom/Zeke/Mr. Friendly quotes Hanso, but that doesn’t mean that they are all DHARMA. I think that the creature had the others recruit SOME of DHARMA when they were there, but not all.
Which makes me wonder about Alex and Danielle, and the whole situation. Alex is with the others and it seems like shes there without resistance. Danielle claims that her friends got sick when they got to the Dark Territory. But WHAT IF it was Danielle that got sick. Maybe the creature on the island wanted her partners but not her, and her partners accepted the others but she didn’t. It seems like Alex could EASILY go see her mom, but doesn’t. I think that is was Danielle who got messed up and her partners joined the others. She only said she killed one of them.
Henry’s “brilliant but unforgiving” Him is the creature. The creature has only killed the pilot of the plane and that’s it. It is probably because the captain of the plane would find a way for the survivors to get off the island (it is part of their training). The creature is a physical manifestation that the creators of the show have created INDEPENDANTLY of the history of humanity. It is their own creation as part of their OWN mythology. I doubt its Hanso. I think that the whole Hanso thing is to give us a connection with the outside world. I think it will be more important to the actual discoverery of the island that was is happening on the island. Which brings the next question…what is the island?
I like the idea of the Vile Vorticies. There are 12 places on the planet in which mangetic fluxuations are abnormal. Oceanic flight 815 flew over one, Desmond passed one, Danielle past one, the Drug plane passed one, and there is one in the arctic (polar bears). It is interesting. The island could be a transport recepticle for these vortices. But it may not just be the vorticies in general, but maybe the electromagnetism on the island causes random events in the world in the electromagnetic sense that causes a transportation. The magnet on the island is a central cause of this, and thus the island is the home of the EM fluxuations.
Think of this. The DHARMA initiative was started by the Degroots. And in the orientation film it was said that they were from the university of Michigan. U of M is about 100 miles from the Marysbourgh vortex in Lake Ontario. I think that the Degroots found the island by sending a transmitter into Lake Ontario and found the transmission at the island and decided that this would be a good place to do their experiments so they could determine how the world worked, and proposed it to Hanso. They messed up the magnet though, and the result was the button in the swan. I think that the island is responsible for all strange disapperaneces in the world. For instance, flight 815 flew directly over a vile vortex, the nigerian drug plane flew over a VV, Desmond and Danielle piloted a ship over a VV and so forth. And ALSO for a point of fact, I remember seeing on THF.com something about Zanzibar, so I looked it up. Turns out that back in the mid 1800s, Zanzibar was the main port for the british to perform slave trade over the indian ocean with boats. Also, Zanzibar basically in a vortex…explaining the black rock.
Also to note that the only extreme cold science bases are set on Antarctica. Antarctica is also a vortex, and That is where that station at the end of the seasion two finale was set, because it could detect the magnetic flux better. The detected the flux before from the date of 1/6/03, when ther was a COMPLETE system failure according to the map.
“All paths lead here”, as to the island. All paths of connection between people as well. I think that in collaboration with the creature and the electromagnetism on the island, all connections seem to lead there. Letting the magnet go off causes new things to crash there. The dates on the map for “System Failure” are 4/8/00, 8/15/01, and 1/6/03. I believe that the first was what caused Desmond to crash, and the third is what cause the ballon with the REAL henry gail to crash. In all this randomness with EM crashes, they all seem to have an underlying connection.
And so, heres what my idea of the Lost Mythology actually is. Cuse and Lindelof talked about in a podcast about this weird connection the had before they met involving a picture. I think that they have created their own mythology that is Lovecraftian in nature that is a unifying force explaining all the connections of humanity and the world, and the island represents the most important connections. That’s why we cant figured out exactly what is going on, because we don’t know everything that is in their minds, but we can find things out.
The EM on the island influences everything in the world, such as the collapse of Atlantis. Its entirely possible, as I speculated LONG ago that this was involved, and a four toed statue seems to fit in well.
I will update this soon, I just wanted to get it out there.
as an aside...i am saying that the magnet is the actual source of this connective force...magnets are attractive forces after all (or repelling...which is also interesting to think of). the monster could be the guider of this force...choosing where to deposit it. the vorticies are high concentrations of the force that are so powerful that they can bring people to the island (which may not even be located where the plane crashed). _________________ http://www.myspace.com/pubclear

just as an aside, i will flush this out better for viewers who arent as in tone into the show and other theories online as some others. It will be a generally easy theory to follow by tomorrow. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/pubclear |

Fantastic insights, PubClear. I think this type of thinking is one of the smartest I have come across. It makes sense, and it's certainly thinking outside the box.
Congrats |

PubClear,
When I first read your 'Atlantis' theory, I was blown away. I've always checked our your stuff since then... I love to read, and love to write, I've been doing it all of my life, and I find it odd when you say you've been considering not posting anymore theories, because I've been thinking the same thing. I gave you a shout out in what I considered to be my "last" Big Theory (Eternity Theory [and 3rd Policeman]), because your 'vile vortice' idea helped inspire me... I'm 23 years old and I've always loved to read and write, and LOST was one of the best shows in my life, and this forum came along. I had no idea what the fu*k an internet forum was, then my girlfriend explained it to me, and I eventually joined. And like you, I enjoy the fact that other people could read and comment on what I wrote. I've never played "message board games" either, at least I don't think so, I consider myself to be here for intellectual reasons.
My point is, out of all the theorists (since I've joined), you have been one of the brightest. I've decided not to stop on the theorizing, maybe you have other reasons to write, but I don't. I started to construct a novel once, and after a while, after staying up for countless nights, smoking dope and wracking my frazzled mind in front of a computer screen, I became too burned out and was just to busy to commit. So I feed my addiction (writing - not drugs ) here. I wish I could go to Hollywood, everybody in high school thought I would run away and make movies... I guess there's always a time....
Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but I felt I had to reply. This theory is excellent, and if it is your last, I give you my applause. My father has tons of LoveCraft in his library, and he's aways talking it up. I'll have to get a stack the next time I'm home.
Peace (and how about this encore) _________________

I Love It.
I really do hope it is more Lovecraftian. big fan of his writings and have
to say that the island does agree with some of his philosphy.
Would be killer to see something with an octopus head like Cthulhu is
described to be like pictured either on a rock or on the underwater hatch.
As for his size.. I'm sure it said that Cthulhu was 2 miles tall.. either
that or it was just an example as to how massive he is, and not an exact
measurement of height.
good going on the Theory, keep up the great work. |

great use of the cthulu mythos there pubclear.
i've always felt that 'him' was evil incarnate (as in randall flagg in the stand) and one of the great elders would certainly fit that bill.
see the illuminatus trilogy for another example of 'great evil' being 'held' in a prison. _________________ my simple theory

I said this was my last theory...but ive realized something...that all my theories that i have made all lead up to a unified theory. im going to post it in the near future when i have time (im working two full time jobs)...but i hope it is as inciteful as can be. thank you all for recognizing my works and whatnot...i hope not to disappoint. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/pubclear |
