Hi folks

One particular scene in this finale made me think " I saw this somewhere... but where?"

This is the scene where Desmond activates the Failsafe. A strident noise then fulls the air and some kind of very heavy atmospheric disturbance takes place. People grab their ears in suffering, as this phenomenon engulfs the whole island.

In a 1980 movie called 'The Final countdown', the USS Nimitz carrier encounters a magnetic storm and then travels back in time just before Pearl Harbour attack by Japaneses.

The scene where the storms catches the carrier is extremely similar to this Lost scene. People are also deafened by a strident noise while the elements are dechained....

Here is a short account of the beginning movie, and surprisingly, it gives somes interesting similitudes and possible insights on the Lost scenarists' inspirations.

"The USS Nimitz, a nuclear aircraft carrier with full combat complement, is awaiting launch from Pearl Harbor, in the mid 1980s. A Mr. Tideman, CEO of Tideman Enterprises, shows up to give the crew a sendoff. Mr. Tideman is later revealed to be one of the designers of the USS Nimitz. He also delayed its launch by two days. The Nimitz passes through some sort of seemingly natural electromagnetic storm, and vanishes. When they come out of the storm, the crew begins to notice that all communication with Pearl Harbor is gone, their support fleet has vanished, and all transmissions they intercept are of pre-WW2 variety--Jack Benny comedy broadcasts, a Joe Lewis boxing match, among others. At first the crew is badly shaken by this, because they believe that they are at war, and that Pearl Harbor has been destroyed. Sending out a number of aircraft to do recon, they quickly discover other strange sightings: a pair of mint-condition WW2 vintage Japanese Zero fighter planes, and more alarmingly, Pearl Harbor in undamaged condition. The memorial to the attack is gone, and the harbor is filled with all of the ships that were destroyed in the Japanese attack. From this, the captain surmises that the electromagnetic storm which the ship passed through was some sort of time portal, and it has taken them back from the mid 1980s, to December 6, 1941, less than 24 hours before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor."

I can't remember this Lost episode where the radio intercepts some very old tune. But that could confirm the much evoked possibility that Losties are lost in time, not in space.

The incredible amount of technology, sea and air traffic, satellites, and so on.. makes it impossible for an uncharted, unvisited, island of this kind to exist...today.

I venture to say that the only possibility is that the electromagnetic accident that Desmond activated on 9/22/04 not only crashed the plane, but made it warp back in time in an amount comprised between 50 and 80 years to reach the local time frame of the Island. This simple offset in time would explain why anybody would come and rescue them.

The planes from Nigeria, Desmond's boat, the Black Rock ship have all, in a way or in another being catched by this temporal black hole, in a kind of 'Bermuda Triangle' phenomenon. They are stuck them in this spatio-temporal singularity.

I don't have imagined yet how Hanso Fundation and the others could fit in that theory.

When Desmond activated the Failsafe, an interference occured in the space-time continuum, and it rippled away to reach the present, and was detected by the two scientists in the North Pole. the Losties and the scientists are not in the same time frame, yet the signal travelled...

.. Perhaps someone can come with other elements that could confirm/disprove this theory ?

Thanks

wow, the final countdown and lost, together in one theory. I watched that movie a thousand times when i was a kid. The sound from the failsafe was very similar to the one in the movie, but where was the swirling green lights?

If they really are in another time, then most likely in the very, I mean VERY far past. Seriously, like "I-couldn't-find-Fidji-because-it-not-yet-exists"-past. ^^

Actually, the whole magnetic references on Lost remind me of the Philadelphia Experiment conspiracy. As it goes, it is once believed that our goverment once experimented with electro-magnetism by trying to cloak an entire Naval Distroyer (which worked), but ill side affects occured which stopped all further research. Aside from killing most of the crew, it's also believe time shifting occurred as well.

Could the "Others" have mastered this technology and are using it to "hide" the Island were a utopia society thrives in secret? It would explain why the "others" only want "good" people as to not contaminate their society.

they listen to records, watch film reals and use the oldest computers in the world.
this could be due to the time travel theory, or becuase the project was abandoned.
did anyone else notice they had 2 brand new kenmore washer and dryer?

I love the time travel theory. My friends and I have thought this was the case for some time. Altho, I think that there has to be someone(not the others) that are able to jump back and forth to bring food and such new things. I do not think they are as far back as before fiji type places were found coz if this were so, how would you explain the new candy bars that they all know. I feel that the others were once just like our losties are. I think they were part of the army at some stage and were in the same core as the guy that Hurley got the numbers off. If you remember they were in the army and went to find where these numbers were coming from and what they are.
I think that the Adam and Eve people that were found in the cave came from the ship at the black rock area. Maybe an Italian ship as the Italians very often lay their dead to rest in huge tomb like things. The ship also tells me that things have been getting stuck on the island for some time as you can see the age of the ship and the fact that slaves were tied up under the deck.
Our losties have far from seen the whole island, This makes me think there still could be other types of transports that have crashed on the island. This is why I think the others were in the army and have become stuck on the island going after the numbers and have been there so long that they have just come to know that they are not going to get off the island and have found ways to keep well and stay out of trouble with the monstar. This also may explain where they got a boat from, Coudl have been a boat that went along with a larger ship or boat that they crashed there with at some other part of the island.
Anyway I coudl be wrong and please excuse the way this is typed out as thsi is my first time on any forum. Embarassed Embarassed

Nope, because that doesn't explain why Penelope and the Portugese are involved. Unless you think they will race to the island only to find skeletons and wreckage from when our losties had this whole adventure decades ago. And hwat we are seeing now is all in the past and penelope arrives 40/50 years too late.

Sort of disappointing ending tho isnt it? Sad

This might explain how the others knew where the plane would crash before it did. Since they were in location and just walked out and planted spies as soon as it hit the ground. It shows they knew something all along.

I like the time theory but its a hard one to nail down. So far all the things that have happened in Lost are relatively easy to explain / digest. This does make whacked out and hard to explain things a no-no for the producers and the audience alike.

I'd like some time travel links to lost, lets see.

If they are in the far far past then how would the bunkers have all the stuff in them. Mayo, Peanut butter ect. Besides the experiment took place in 1980.
