Stephen King, using his alias - Richard Bachman - published a novel in the early 1980s about a futuristic reality TV series where the contestants are convicts placed against brutal odds, the game is rigged, and it's ultimate outcome is their death. The novel was called 'The Running Man.'

Imagine...

MINUS 108 and counting...

A stadium lit up like a blanket of stars. The mantra of one thousand fans, young and old, hollering and cheering. Their fiery, money-hungry eyes centered on the stage, where a one-armed Asian man wearing a jet black tuxedo grasps a microphone and announces to the world that "LOST IS ON TOOOOOOOOONIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGHHHHHHHTTTTTT!"

Every soul here has their hopes riding on the tickets they clutch in their pasty hands. The tickets read:

$500 on BOONE (to die)

$1000 on SAYID (to live)

$2000 on LOCKE (to live)

$800 on JACK (to die)

$500 on MICHAEL (to die)

$1000 on CLAIRE (to live)

The Asian man, with his one arm, gestures to the gigantic screen behind him - where the larger than life faces of these names flash by with the odds of their survival posted alongside. Jack's survival... Hurley's survival... Etc...

The Candle-Man (as he is known to his legion of fans throughout the world) announces the rules once more. You can bet on anyone. New or old. At anytime. You can bet they will live. You can bet they will die. Or you can win big and pick the Ultimate Survivor.

The year is 2022. It is a wicked world. Reality TV has become a violent, heart-wrenching rollercoaster ride where the contestants are criminals and mental patients and human slaves.

MINUS 42 and counting...

A Dharma Corporation logo flashes on the screen. Fans at home bask in television's soothing glow as they watch their favorite reality TV series - that is LOST. Imagine the commercials for Widmore Brand Penis Pills... Or Dharma Brand Cereal Flakes. Dharma Brand Condoms... Suddenly, on the tiny TV screen, we see a close-up of Kate. The fans watching the show at home are trying to guess who could be this year's mole... Or moles. Kate has been spotted early on, as she obviously carries several hidden cameras and microphones, and constantly ends up on dangerous, exhilarating adventures, and is already involved in a love triangle.

Rumor has it that Dharma Studios sends in several undercover agents as well. These moles are experts in deciet, nearly impossible to spot, sent in to manipulate certain aspects of survival (medicine, weapons, drugs), which, in turn, put the odds in Dharma's favor.

The house always wins.

MINUS 23 and counting...

The unlucky contestants in this nightmare of a gameshow wake up on the beach. After a plane-crash that almost no one remembers. On an island that the world has forgot.. Or so they think.

Purchased by the Widmore family with the intention of filming a multi-million dollar reality series, the island sits off the coast of Mexico - just far enough that it can not be spotted by the human eye. The waters surrounding the island were restricted, the air-space as well, all to ensure no one - absolutely no one - gets out... Or in...

Hidden cameras are everywhere, filming the contestants day and night as they try and cope with the dangers and mystery of the land they inhibit. The polar bears. The hatch. The monster. The numbers. The miracles. The others. All these are simple plot devices conjured up by Dharma exectutives to boost ratings and (simply) to provide entertainment for the millions of fans throughout the world.

In Korea - the bets on Jin have reached the million dollar mark.

MINUS 16 and counting...

Tonight, in the audience, a man who sold his house and car - only to bet it all on Boone - shot himself as the Candle-Man presented the gory, chart-topping footage of Boone's death...

MINUS 15 and counting...

The crowd goes wild as the Candle-Man suddenly appears on the screen, in a cameo role, playing a scientist in a silly red herring of video. A video that was intentionally placed in the hands of the un-knowing contestants, with the purpose of continuing them down the best path - chosen by the show's producers, of course.

MINUS 8 and counting...

A helicopter with a Dharma logo stamped on it's side lands on the beach. The deaths of Sayid and Eko had been major upsets, rioting commenced, people were trampled to death in the studio, the season was brought to an immediate close. Only Jack and Locke remained, there on the beach, as the curtain was raised from their eyes. Ushered onto the helicopter - and with no sympathy - they were told the truth on the way to the airport...

MINUS 4 and counting...

The Ultimate Survivors. A tie. Jack and Locke, side by side, on another Oceanic Flight. Flying back to LA, back to prison, if they were lucky. Still wearing their island clothes, stained with blood and sweat. Neither of them has touched their martini. Both are in shock, as the un-imaginable truth has been revealed - and the emotional impact of it all - the deciet, the mind-control, witnessing the deaths of so many - has driven them beyond the realms of reasonable thought. Things begin to change. Plans begin to form.

Jack, moving at lightning speed, overpowers one of the air marshalls and obtains the gun he so desperately needs.

And here they are - Jack Shepard and John Locke - science and faith. Nearly in complete control, madness slow-dancing in their wild eyes, the two men charge the cockpit.

The sky had deepened to a shade that borderlined between royal velvet and black. The city lights sprawled out below. The plane was going down. The "controlled descent" begins.

"This kind of descent," Locke says, "would be nice for a change."

Jack was flying the aircraft with the help of the pilot, and Locke was holding the gun to the pilots head. In the distance, they could almost see their target.

Imagine...

A colossal Dharma logo glowing in the night. Jack and Locke's final destination.

And at the top of this skyscraper that is Dharma Studios, a man named Alvar Hanso, creator of the infamous reality TV series LOST, hears an aircraft approaching, and turns slowly in his leather chair to see the forthcoming plane...

Yeah I had wondered in the first season about the possibility of this all being a game show. However, the second season makes me think otherwise.... And some characters, like Rousseau, just make the gameshow idea seem out of place.

very good theory indeed. it almost seems like the most logical at this point. get a few nieve people about 40 others to be in the background and wathc the plot unfold between the 7 or 9 sides of the dharma shaped vortex with mr. you can't see yet in the middle with only one eyeball controlling it all with his head and wirtes to think that living on a crazy island with a hatch, monster, pirate ship, electromagnetic ballyhoo, "others"', polar bears, nearly perfect cave setting for showers, guns? a what a game show indeed. kind of survivor meets running man meets truman show. brilliant thought indeed. my apoloogies on this one...very tired i had a good thought originally i think. hopefully you smirk.

I love this -- I've been thinking it's all some kind of "Truman Show" experiment for some time, but this game show scenario (and your great storytelling) makes me very excited!

I meant "rule" facetiously. I've posted on lots of forums, and I've never heard anyone say it isn't cool to bump your own thread. If that's an unspoken bit of etiquette, I wasn't aware.

My apologies, I only wish for LOST fans to read and enjoy my work, and I deeply value the opinions of those who are interested enough to reply...
