|

OK this theory is nowhere near complete, and it doesn't explain everything that happens on the show, but I stumbled across this subject (and the website at the bottom) and thought it seemed relevant.
In Sanskrit,
Hamsa can mean Swan or Divine Breath OR...
The Hand Of Fatima, an amulet used to ward off "The Evil Eye"
Also in Sanskrit,
Lochan means "Eye"
"I have looked into the eye of this island, and what I saw was beautiful". (John Locke)
AS WE KNOW, EACH CHARACTER CENTRIC EPISODE OPENS WITH A CLOSE UP OF THE EYE...
“The evil eye is the name for a sickness transmitted, usually without intention, by someone who is envious, jealous, or covetous.”
The "sickness" is mentioned numerous times on the island.
"From within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye,
blasphemy, pride, foolishness."
Mark 7:21-22
When Ecko confronts the "monster", it seems to contain his memories. Maybe the "monster" is the projection of The Evil Eye?
This was from another website...
“Some believe that matiasma (evil eye) can kill or maim livestock, cause mechanical failure in machinery, even topple carts of fruit and brick walls.”
Could The Evil Eye have caused the plane crash?
“Children seem to be most susceptible to this ailment, although adults may suffer from it occasionally. Babies suffer the direst consequences. They have a very high fever, a lack of appetite and sleep, and usually a swelling on some part of the body. So if a woman casts an evil eye on a child's hand, it will be swollen and red.”
Maybe The Others want Walt and Aaron to give them the vaccine and protect them from The Evil Eye.
“In other cultures, any child taken to public places is smeared or daubed with a little dirt and a bystander can then safely praise the child by using the formula, "Oh, the child is so pretty, too bad he has dirt on him."
Maybe The Others want to appear ragged and unclean in order to prevent compliment, and therefore protect themselves from The Evil Eye.
“In Greece and Turkey, the most common form of apotropaic charm is the blue glass eye charm, which "mirrors back" the blue of the evil eye and thus confounds it.”
Wasn't a glass eye found in the medical bunker?
Could the relation between the Hand Of Fatima and Hanso be the reason The Others are on the island, to take the people who aren't immune and give them the vaccine. The Hanso Foundation may infact be on the island to analyse the effects of The Evil Eye, and possibly cure it?
Could it be that Danielle killed the rest of her crew, by coveting her daughter and therefore possibly infecting them?
Could it possibly be that the reason Michael isn't allowed to return to the camp is because he would long for Walt and possibly infect some of them?
And could it be, that the survivors unknowingly project The Evil Eye to the rest of the island?, as in some cultures it is believed that people can have the hidden ability to project The Evil Eye...
Also, if you Google image search for The Evil Eye you will find many blue glass eye beads used to ward off The Evil Eye. The similarity of these and the Oceanic Airlines logo is interesting...
If you Google search The Evil Eye you will find alot of interesting stuff as it is still a popular superstition today.
(most of the quotes above where from http://www.luckymojo.com/evileye.html, please visit it as it is very interesting in relation to LOST)
It isn't conclusive, but interesting never the less, feel free to discuss LoL |

I'm a little late, but on the evil eye subject- I think you have a point, here is something interesting I found on Wikipedia:
Oceanic Airlines logo from LOST:
And this on the "nazar", or turkish word for talisman - warding off the evil eye:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evil_Eye
In particular:
"Disks or balls, consisting of concentric blue and white circles (usually, from inside to outside, dark blue, light blue, white, dark blue) representing an evil eye are common apotropaic talismans in the Middle East, found on the prows of Mediterranean boats and elsewhere; in some forms of the folklore, the staring eyes are supposed to bend the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer."
Along with this tidbit, an image of a Turkish aircraft with "nazar":

Check out these quotes from "evil eye" on wikipedia:
"In some forms, it is the belief that some people can bestow a curse on victims by the malevolent gaze of their magical eye. The most common form, however, attributes the cause to envy, with the envious person casting the evil eye doing so unintentionally. Also the effects on victims vary. Some cultures report afflictions with bad luck..." - Could Hurley's friend have given him the evil eye when Hurley won the lottery? This would explain his bad luck.
"In Brazilian Portuguese [evil eye is translated as] olho gordo, which literally means fat eye" - Hurley is fat, and the men at the end of the finale were speaking Portuguese!
"people with blue eyes are thought to bestow the curse, intentionally or unintentionally." - Who on the island has blue eyes, I wonder? I'm going to watch for it, but I believe they include Claire, Danielle, Kate and Jack, but I may be wrong.
And didn't someone in one of the later episodes comment that somebody's shirt really brought out the blue in their eyes? Maybe this was a clue toward the evil eye theory.
Are these random musings, or are they substantiation for a larger theme here? hmmmm |

As much as I want the evil eye thing to have something to do with it, The whole plane should survive then, since it had a evil eye on it....
I have an evil eye on top of my deck door, I love it _________________

There may be some kind of thematic connection here, but some of the examples you all have been presenting seem like a stretch for an actual explanation--like connection the Evil Eye to the "disease" and the vaccinations. Anyway, thanks for bringing it to our attention! _________________

Not to keep piling on semi observations here, but when I think of one bestowing a curse by perhaps casting the evil eye on, especially, an infant, I immediately think of Danielle Rousseau and her creepy stare on Aaron, and I think I recall him having a fever in one of the subsequent episodes. Does she have blue eyes? Time to take out the Season 1 DVD! _________________ cool whip |

I don't know...
but the eye symbol and representation is very present. it's incredible the number of close shots of eyes in all the episodes... |

Danielle's got blu eyes, just like Alex, her daughter. But...

It was the Arrow station, the one found by the tailies, but I think it belongs to Mr. Candle/Wickman. I'm sure that in the orientation film at Swan station he shows a prostethic left arm and a glass left eye.

Hanso Foundation stuck in a "folklore" belief? When everybody already know the cures? (Hand of Fatima, the nazar). Dunno... _________________ Glenn Miller at the radio...

Yeah. I think it's hard to deny that there's some evidence of this theme in LOST, but hard to say where it fits in overall. It's probably only one small clue as to the overall meaning....and everyone has their own ideas about that. I love this show! _________________ cool whip |

I was pondering this whole "evil eye" theme while watching an old episode, and I noticed a dartboard hanging in the Swan station.
It occurs to me that a dartboard sort of looks like the evil eye and the Oceanic Air logo. I mapped the numbers on a dartboard (42=triple 14, and I couldn't come up with a way to get 23), and I didn't really get anywhere, but maybe someone else has ideas.
By the way, 325 (the direction Fenry told Michael to go to get off the island) roughly correlates with 12 on a dartboard.
Do the numbers possibly correlate with the map of the stations or in some other way? I know this is probably a stupid rabbit trail, but I've been pondering it for the last hour or so and thought it might stimulate someone's thinking.
Either that, or I've made all of you who read this dumber... _________________ "In the end they will lay their freedom at our feet and say to us, 'Make us your slaves, but feed us.'"

Man... if you found a way to obtain 23 with multiplications and/or divisions just tell us... we would have to rewrite mathematics!! 23 is a prime number, so I won't count on moltiplications/divisions to solve the numbers...
And, for the record, the only concentric configuration that works for an evil-eye is this: from inner circle to outmost-> a dark blue spot (the eye), white circle, light-blue circle, dark blue circle... and that's mandatory. _________________ Glenn Miller at the radio...
