I got the book from the library 2 weeks ago and managed to read through it in about 8 days. what a fantastic book, laws yes, M-O-O-N, that spells good book.

as most of us know, the stand was a big influence on LOST and there was many parts that completely screamed lost at me, especially after the season 5 finale. there were a few bits i was going to quote, pieces that, to me, felt like they were actually talking about LOST, but alas i returned the book.

not only was it thematically similar, but even little things, which i am sure i am reading into too much due to my obsession, such as when larry underwood goes to see his mom and says there used to be a statue of a dog on her stoop, but overtime it had been vandalized and all that is left is the lower part of it's back paw. 4 toed statue anyone?

i also decided to rewatch the movie today, now that i have read the book, and while it was good, it desperately needs a makeover. after such successful epics like lord of the rings and lost i think this book can finally properly be made into a movie.

much like LOTR it is split into 3 sections, if they did each as a 3 to 4 hour film, they could make such a great film.

that being said, lets play a little "recast the stand"

stu redman - josh holloway. when i was reading the book i imagined josh as larry underwood, no clue why as he doesn't really fit the part except the sawyer atitude, but i can definitely see him as a good ol' boy from east texas

frannie goldsmith - natalie portman. pretty, but not so overly pretty as to not be accepted as a hot "girl next door" type. she can play great across all range of emotions. just so long as lucas doesn't write the dialogue...

randall flagg - heath ledger, were he still alive. but he's not and so i'm goign out on a limb for this one.... russell brand. he's got a crazy look to him, but can look normal enough. he's a good "wild" actor, not sure about his evil acting, but i think he could do it. plus i saw a drawing of flagg that looked just like him.

harold lauder - topher grace (in a fat suit). we know he can do geeky from that 70s show, and we know he can do evil from spiderman 3 (even if the movie sucked, he did good in it)

larry underwood - not sure, josh holloway keeps coming to mind, but i think that'd be a better fit for stu. joaquim pheonix seems to fit pretty good. so long as he shaves the psycho beard

nick andros - ryan gosling. not much to this character, he's deaf and mute, so it's really about looks and physical acting and dude can do both.

nadine cross - monica belucci. she can pull off both good and evil, as well as being a temptress and being tempted.

trashcan man - brad douriff. crazy ass ####. nough said.

glen bateman - terry o'quinne. he is the only person that can play him

tom cullen - the dude from the miniseries did great, i'd recast him, but not so sure on the age now. if not him, maybe philip seymour hoffman. i'd go john c reilly but he's gotten too well know for wacky comedies now.

your thoughts on the book? the movie? and the recast?

and yes, i'm bored.

I told you you'd never look at the old movie the same again....

It definitely needs to be remade, although I'd settle for The Dark Tower first. I would actually keep Gary Sineese. He has that country wholesomeness Stu possesses. I would also prefer that, aside from a few key characters (Stu, Larry, Flagg) most of the cast be unknowns. Brad Douriff would be Flagg in my remake. Dude is freaky, even when he's a good guy (see: Deadwood).

yeah, gary sinese was great, but if it gets a rehaul it needs to be complete.

and yeah, aside from the big main characters, unknowns would be best. nothing ruins a movie more than some huge unnecessary ensemble cast. some movies can pull it off (oceans 11, magnolia), but a movie like this needs lesser knowns.

can you imagine if they did LOTR with nothing but huge stars? it'd be utter horseshit.
