I found some clues - I don't think I'm stretching it too far.
Just saw the movie, and some things that stood out for me:
The compound Ethan and his team go to salvage a kidnapped operative, Lindsay Farris, in the first action scene looks ALOT like the Widmore Construction building (the one they used from the pink floyd cover). The first shot you see is four smoke stack reflected in a puddle.
The IMF director mentions that the bad guy -Owen Davian - is some sort of munitions magnate? He ships illegal firearms, bioweapons and toxins throughout the world. The Rabbit's Foot is the code name of some bio weapon he is keen to get his hands on. In Brassel's debriefing, he mentions a TOXIN 5 (or something five, referring to an agent) that was shipped to Korea via Davian. I think there might be a connection to Lost where we discover that this agent, or a similar one, is being used on the Island, originating from Korea.
Owen Davian sounds kinda Northern European, or even Slavic in origin, kind of Like "Alvar Hanso".
There were easter eggs - such as Ethan Hunt going by the alias "Kelvin" at one point during a telephone call, and the rescusitation scene was an almost direct rip-off of Charlie's resurrection in Lost (noted above by some other boffin). _________________ Cheers,

Where's the praise for this movie???
This movie blew me away!! I was prepared for dissappointment by the lackluster reviews, but I think JJ nailed it out of the ballpark. It was far more enjoyable then the other two MIs.
I like how detailed and well paced he made it. I think Owen Davian is the best villian ever!!! Phillip Seymour Hoffman made such a believable guy. Not some full of himself villian that makes himself larger than life, instead he is this collected villian with a sick taste for making anyone who crosses him pay dearly. He is without fear, because he is such a freakin mastermind and knows exactly what he's doing.
Laurence Fishburne was at his best. He delivered his lines perfectly. You could actually believe he could have been the best director IMF could ever have or the most corrupt at the same time. It wasn't til it was revealed at the end what way he was siding.
Instead of creating an ultra-complicated, beyond logic defense system for Ethan to overcome in the Shanghai defense building, we see him go in, segue to his teammates having a conversation, then back to him coming out with the prize. J.J. got the obligatory complicated mission impossible out of the way near the beginning in the Vatican.
J.J. made Ving Rhames shine by speaking his directorial wink winks to the audience, i.e. "Of course he'd make it." I didn't really pay much attention to Maggie Q in her regular work clothes, but once she had that red dress on, ooh wee she was smoking hot. Cruise's wife had just enough hotness to her, and kicked ass when she was called to. You could Ethan's pain when the very believable threats were spoken by Owen Davian.
Tom Cruise, as misguided as he is in real life, really carried the movie and was rarely cheesy or unfit to be the badass Ethan Hunt. As we've seen in Lost drawn out emotional shots can pay off amid action. I could read the difficutly Ethan and his fiance wrestled with regarding Ethan's secret.
All in all J.J. really impressed in just about everything he attempted with this movie. For a blockbuster action directorial debut you really could not ask for anything more.
Here are my nitpicks:
Ethan should not have let his ability to hear(read lips) his fiance's conversation slip in front of her friends. He didn't even bother to cover for it.
Keri Russell's death made me feel ill, but that made Owen Davian all the more sick when he said it was fun.
Ethan and team driving off in the boat so visible in the canals was way too attention getting. It'd look cool in some no-brain movie, but didn't fit well here
They didn't show where Ethan got his costume for the airport.
When the helicopters flew around the windmills I was hoping he wasn't going to pull the old let's fly through to kill the bad guy trick.
Owen Davian looked way too comfortable sitting in the helicopter facing Ethan while he let off shots.
The people saving Owen Davian on the bridge were really bad shots, and considering the tech they had at their disposal should have been able to decapacitate Ethan and team, perhaps with a gas grenade. Also Ethan's team was way to concerned with bystanders, I've never seen such concern in an action movie. Even Jack Bauer would take care of business first.
Ethan shouldn't have been able to trust that he could just call up Musgrave and Benji Dunn, then again Ethan was as good as dead if he couldn't trust them for help.
Owen Davian should have noticed Maggie Q's conspicuous compact, and he should have been ruthless toward her clumsiness, if not suspiscious. Maybe her presence sizzling his retina disabled his mastermind thought process.
The disposable camera must have been a joke. Cause it was too damn funny to be taken serious. I think J.J. did it on a dare, or a kid in the family came up with it.
I left with the best feeling I've had after an action movie in years. If you don't think this was the best secret agent action movie in a while, please share what was better, I'd really like to see it. I've seen MI1&2, and this is much better. |

I felt the most obvious LOST reference was Ethan counting down, then saying EXECUTE and (drum roll) HITTING A BUTTON!!!! That was priceless, my friend and I laughed our asses off.
I enjoyed the film. The beginning felt like "Look, Tom Cruise in a 7-11" and "Tom Cruise in a regular people party!" and "Tom Cruise in a hospital!" I could almost see the script meeting.
"Tom, I want to see you in places regular people go. Have you ever even been inside a 7-11?
Ethan leaping off the roof was VERY Ghost in The Shell. I was waiting for his thermoptic camo to kick in!!
And hey, Keri Russell looked like she's been around a few guns! That was a great scene.
And Simon Pegg? He rocked this film. The Anti-God? OH YEAH!!!
I didn't pick up a lot of LOST references, and I was actually glad for that.

For anyone out there who has not seen the movie, I offer two words of advice:
Don't bother...
There simply is no plot in the movie. Sure, he's going after the Rabbit's Foot... but why? They never say what it is, they never explain why the bad guy could not get it himself, they never even show Ethan Hunt and his band of IMF misfits actually accomplishing this "Impossible Mission". Most of the movie is just mindless stunts - which is very cool - but absent a plot, the explosions just become silly.
Typically, you would need a plot to have accompanying "plot holes" - but somehow MI3 managed to achieve the impossible. Most of the movie just did not make sense - key elements and explanations were ridiculous, and in some cases, entirely implausible.
However, if you do see it, I have two more words of advice:
Michael Jackson...
Ethan Hunt's fiance looks exactly like the King of Pop. The hair, the eyes, the lips... it is like Tom Cruise is making out with Michael Jackson in every scene - and that may actually be a reason to see the movie! _________________ "If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject." - Ayn Rand |

obligatory complicated mission impossible? You make it sound as if the scenes like the one in the Vatican aren't good for the MI movies, when in fact scenes like that are what made the first MI so good. Secret spies are meant to go about their business in secret, not by blowing stuff up. If I wanted lots of gun battles and explosions I would watch the second MI (which is absolutely the worst one). _________________ Lost is the new Twilight Zone...'nuff said. |

| Mission Impossible 3 was a great movie! people didn't see it because of Tom Cruise and his silly shenanigans. Lost of course is by far the best television show ever... I hope J.J. gets the directors chair for Star Trek 11, he earned it. |

well as far as lost references in MI3 go (yes its been mentioned before, but since this is a sticky should be in here too) i havent seen mentioned in this thread that the building ethan infiltrates from the roof carries the Paik industries logo, so perhaps a clue about the nature of sun's dad's involvement in Lost.
